The paper “Nature of Lone-Pair–Surface Bonds and Their Scaling Relations” is out! It describes how an important class of molecules with active 2p lone pair electrons (water, ammonia, alcohols, esthers, and amines) form bonds with surfaces. One of the interesting highlights is the role of local electric fields and polarization of the lone-pair orbital on ionic surfaces resulting in a strong “electrostatically driven bond”.
